The Fifteenth Annual Cathedral Heritage Gala
November 14, 2015

This year's Gala will be a wonderful event held at the newly and beautifully renovated Catholic Pastoral Center on Victory Drive.   The Gala will begin at 7:00PM with cocktails and hors d’oeuvres plus music provided by New Arts Ensembles.  Guests will have time to tour the new Pastoral Center and hear information about the building’s rich history. There will be a silent auction during this time where guests can bid using the BidPal app to constantly monitor and update bids. Heavy Hors d’oeuvres will follow shortly thereafter, catered by Chef Nick Mueller. Seating will be provided for all guests in the main tent in front of the Pastoral Center or in the Boland Auditorium.

Parking is available at the Pastoral Center for the first eighty cars.  Additional parking is available in the shopping center lot next door with easy sidewalk access.  Valet parking will also be available, courtesy of the Benedictine Cadets.  The silent auction opens immediately and remains open through most of the evening.  Silent auction items include many gift certificates to local restaurants, hotels, retail stores and tickets to events.  The Live Auction will begin at approximately 9:00PM with twelve valuable items up for bid. Auction items include an oil painting of the Cathedral, by local artist and Cathedral parishioner Mary Lawrence Kennickell, a Sunset Cruise on O.C. Welch’s yacht, Father Schreck’s famous Wine Dinner(s), a golf outing, weekend getaway package(s), Bishop Hartmeyer’s “Mystery” item, an hour in the Flight Safety Gulfstream Jet Simulator, and the prized Bishop’s Dinner. John Wetherbee, WTOC Meteorologist and another Cathedral parishioner, will be our auctioneer. Tickets to the Gala are $150 each.

If you can’t attend the Gala, there are many other ways to support the Cathedral Endowment Fund.  We have Platinum, Gold, Silver and Bronze sponsorship levels – some of which include tickets to the Gala and advertisements in the Gala program.  We also have different program advertisements, with various sizes and costs from an eighth page to full page ads. Finally, our Cathedral Friends can donate at the Patron, Partner, or Supporter levels. More information is available at or by calling 912-233-4709.

The Cathedral is Part of Historic Savannah, GA

The Cathedral of St. John the Baptist is a Savannah Landmark.  Its twin spires are among the most prominent structures on the Savannah skyline.   Recently, TripAdviser readers ranked the Cathedral among the TOP TEN DESTINATIONS in the United States along with such famous places as The Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco and Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C.    The Cathedral Heritage Gala isn't just for Catholics -- it's a community event for everyone who loves the beauty of our 19th century Cathedral and wants to help preserve its future.

How are the Cathedral’s Preservation and Restoration Projects Funded?

In 2001, Bishop J. Kevin Boland and Monsignor William O. O’Neill wisely envisioned a new, sustainable method of funding the Cathedral’s capital building needs. A Heritage Endowment Fund was established to move beyond the history of remedial repairs funded by debt. This Fund leads to a future of less-costly conservation and preservation paid with the investment returns of a body of funds specifically dedicated solely to those purposes.

What is the primary source of funding for the Heritage Endowment Fund?

The Annual Heritage Preservation Gala is held each year in the fall with all net proceeds going into the Heritage Endowment Fund. As we begin preparations for the 2015 Gala, the Endowment Fund has over $1,900,000 in assets and is generating annually over $100,000 in investment returns. We must broaden the Fund’s base of fi nancial support— and thus, produce greater investment earnings to sustain the Cathedral for generations to come.
